One of the first snowfalls of the season came the other night and as lovely as it was, it reminded that I needed to double-check our family itinerary for our holiday vacation. Snow is nice and all, but taking a break from the snow is just a nice (sometimes even better.) Last December we spent two weeks at Myrtle Beach and this year we are going to Miami. It’s a big family affair, my parents, my sister and her family and my brother-in-law and his kids, everyone is invited, everyone except family pets that is. I love cats and dogs as much as the next person (okay, maybe I love cat far more than the next person) but when traveling down south they are more of a nuisance than a blessing.

That being said, the biggest hassle of our trip last year was getting our family feline, Mimi, into her travel carrier so we could take her to a cat hotel at our vet’s office. What an ordeal!!! If you have ever dealt with trying to stuff, I mean gently place (yes, I really do mean gently placing) a cat into a carrier that they do not want to go in, you know exactly what I mean. Luckily, I have since trained Mimi, to love and welcome her travel carrier. So considered these tips as my Christmas gift to you and your furry friend.

It’s best to get a carrier that opens from the top as well as the side. This allows two options for entry, if you have a scaredy cat, you can place them into the carrier from the top and if you have trained your cat, they have the option of freely walking in and out of the carrier from the side. Start training your cat now! Make the carrier inviting as possible, keep it in a room in the house that the cat frequents, make it cozy and from time-to-time place treats in there. Eventually your cat should take to the carrier and see it as a relaxed, safe place to hang out in. Once you’ve got to this point it will be smooth sailing.

Happy Holidays.

See you on the other side of Miami!
