1) Iguanas are cheap pets. = MYTH.
While the iguana itself may only cost thirty dollars, creating a proper home for your iguana will cost a lot upfront. If you have any questions about the type of terrarium you need come see the reptile vet at Ashbridges Bay Animal Hospital and we will be happy to help.

2) Iguanas are hardcore vegans. = FACT.
Vegetables only please! Iguanas do not eat animal protein of any sort.

3) Iguanas sallow their food whole. = FACT.
True, so make sure you cut up your iguanas food nice and small for them, otherwise they might choke on the pieces.

4) As long as your house is warm your iguana will be fine. = MYTH.
Your iguana should have its terrarium at a regulated temperate that ranges between 26 and 32 degrees Celsius.

5) The UV light in your iguana’s home should stay on at all times. = MYTH.
No no no no, not only is this a waste of energy but your lizard likes some dark times too. 12 hours on, 12 hours off is safe ratio.

6) Iguanas can grow up to 4-6 feet in length. = FACT.
Whoa! That’s big so be prepared. If you aren’t ready to house an animal of this size come in and talk to the vets at Ashbridges and they can help determine the best kind of terrarium animal for you.

7) Iguanas want dry heat. = MYTH.
Green iguanas come from the rainforests of South America where the environment is very warm and very humid. Along with a thermometer you should also keep a humidity cage in your pet’s tank. The humidity in the tank should be around 80%.
