My trip to Baker Lake, Nunavut.

While most students are anxious about returning to school in September, I was anxious about taking my first trip with the Canadian Animal Assistance Team.  This year a team of 9 individuals, including myself, set out to Baker Lake, Nunavut, for a vaccine and sterilization clinic. This was CAAT’s third visit to this particular community so we were given a very warm reception when we arrived.

Our vaccine clinic was located in the garage of the Police Station. We were open from about Noon to 6pm daily. We also made house calls and special trips to vaccinate entire sled dog teams on the Tundra! Our surgery clinic was located in the garage of the wildlife office. It was quite a different set-up from what I was accustomed to.  Our intake, surgery prep station, surgery table, and recovery area, were all located within the same space. The majority of procedures were routine spays and neuters, but we also did some minor dental work, a lump removal, and a laceration repair.  By the end of the week we had performed surgery on approximately 30-40 animals, and vaccinated about 200.

The Team was given a day off to explore the community. We decided to go hiking on the Tundra with hopes of seeing some wildlife. The landscaping was beautiful! Trees do not grow in Nunavut, but there were small plants completely blanketing the ground. We could see rolling hills of vibrant greens, reds, oranges, and yellows, for kilometers.  By the end of the hike we had seen birds, caribou bones, and even “droppings”, but no live mammals.

The people, their pets, and the land were amazing. It was the most rewarding experience of my life. I am hoping to participate with the Canadian Animal Assistance Team in the future.  If you are interested in hearing more details from the trip, or more about the CAAT, please check out www.caat-canada.org
