Roundworm can infect your puppy, your adult dog and even in some cases young children. The more you know about it the better off you and your family will be. To help you out Bloor Animal Hospital has made a list of essential things you need to know. If you have questions always feel free to give us a call or stop by!

What is roundworm?

Roundworms are parasites that live in the intestine and feed off of partially digested food. The two most common strains found in dogs are Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina, the former of which can be transmitted to humans. Yuck!

How are roundworms contracted?

Roundworm eggs are found in the feces of infected animals (which can also include rodents, earthworms, roaches and birds) therefore if your dog licks or sniffs infected feces they are at risk.

How can you tell if your pup has roundworm?

Common symptoms of roundworm are stunted growth, potbelly and reoccurring diarrhea.  However, the most common sign is nothing at all.  If you notice any of these bring your pup in and we can check their stool to confirm the diagnosis.

What will happen if my dog gets roundworm?

Roundworm is most harmful to puppies, so keep an eye on your little guy when they are outside! Roundworms feed off of partially digested food so if there is an abundance of them they may end up robbing your puppy of proper nutrients and may end up stunting growth. Roundworms can also be transmitted from a mother to her pup, both while she is pregnant and through her milk.

Can humans get roundworm?

Yes, if a young child were to swallow a large number of eggs they are at risk of becoming infected. Because of the risk to humans the Centre for Disease Control recommends that all dogs be de-wormed on a regular basis and that regular parasite screens should be run on stool samples.

How do you treat and prevent the spread of roundworm?

Bring your pup to the Bloor Animal Hospital to have it de-wormed on a regular basis and look for a heartworm medication that is effective against intestinal parasites like roundworm too. With the help of the vets and friendly staff at Bloor Animal Hospital you can be better informed to determine the best prevention plan for your pup.

Remember the best way to treat roundworm is to prevent it! Be diligent about picking up after your dog to help stop the spread and transmission of roundworm.
