Dr. Jonathan Bloom was born in Toronto and graduated from, Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph in 1993. He joined Willowdale group in 1995. His special areas of professional interest include preventive healthcare and early detection screening, diseases of the eye and endocrinology. He was lead author in one of the most revered veterinary journals for his research in diseases of the eye and more recently, a key opinion speaker at veterinary seminars. He holds proud affiliations with the Ontario veterinary medical association, Canadian veterinary medical association, and College of Veterinarians of Ontario. Dr. Bloom also has a love for continuing education and professional advancement.

For Dr. Bloom his journey into veterinary medicine started as a child, with his love for the family dog – Bentley. Combine that with his affinity for helping people and soon after that, suggestions that he become a teacher because of his gift for communication and bringing about understanding. Helping pets became his passion, and knowing that I helped their owners became his gratification. Given a strong medical upbringing, looking after pets and their owners is simply where he had to be – nothing could be better.

Dr. Bloom’s hobbies include skiing, cooking, swimming, biking and more recently, a venture into snowboarding!

He has a wonderful family of 6 – including his fantastic wife, 2 wonderful daughters, a fantastic son, and the cutest pug ever – Ripley.

Willowdale Animal Hospital News

Springtime has come to Toronto and the GTA! Warmer days and evenings mean we can stay out longer and more comfortably in the great outdoors with our four-legged friends. Unfortunately, warmer weather means the mosquitoes are out too, and it’s time to once again think about heartworm prevention for our dogs and cats.

When infected mosquitoes bite into your pet, they shoot a bunch of tiny baby worms called microfilariae into your pet’s blood stream. Once they’re inside, the dreaded worms plant themselves into the right side of the heart and waste no time in rapidly reproducing and blocking blood flow throughout the body of your pet, which can be fatal if not treated immediately. As the worms travel, they rupture blood cells and vessel walls along their way to the heart. They are simply reckless. Since there is no way to completely avoid mosquitoes, veterinarians recommend monthly treatments to help prevent the heartworm larvae from growing into adult form inside your pet’s heart and lungs. “More than one-half of Canadian households (53 per cent) own a cat or a dog. One in ten households (13 per cent) own both cats and dogs. The results suggest that there are over 7 million cats and over 5 million dogs living in Canadian homes.” Paws and Claws a Syndicated Study on Canadian Pet Ownership

Any creature that breathes, eats and produces waste has an impact on the environment and your pet is no exception. As communities look for ways to reduce, reuse and recycle, pet owners too must play their part in reducing the waste that pets create. Using biodegradable doggy doo bags during dog walks is a start. Where compost programs are in place you may deposit fur, bedding from pet cages and wood shavings for Green Bin collection. Don’t forget to include any leftover pet food, fruits, vegetables, bones, meats, fish and poultry and use certified compostable liner bags. Read More

The group toured our hospital, visiting a few of our patients and discussed empathy with Dr.Lyons. Then they all gowned up to practice empathy on their own patients, teddy bears! The little surgeons preformed surgery on their stuffed patients and removed small treat packets consumed by these mischievous toys.  Read More
